Oak House.

Oak House sits amongst the picturesque valleys of a rural West Yorkshire village. Our clients purchased the property and appointed Dempsey + Gannon to transform it into their dream, forever home. The brief was formulated by working closely with the clients to understand how the house could compliment their day to day lives. This led to an opening up of the house and using devices such changes in level, sliding doors and carefully positioned storage to articulate the space.

The proposal invites into the home the abundant views of the stunning surroundings, through the use of large ‘picture frame’ windows. Generous skylights provide the opportunity to capture as much natural light as possible. This light accentuates the tactile material pallet of terracotta floor tiles, textured clay plaster walls and Ash joinery items. The threshold between interior and exterior is blurred by continuing the the terracotta tiling across the garden patio, serving as a device to invite the garden in to the home. Window seats are also implemented to offer a space to sit and take in the views on warm summer days. Oak timber battens are used as the main external finish, complimenting the character of the existing house and surroundings.

All materials and labour have been sourced locally to help reduce the carbon footprint of the project. Sustainability was shared as a priority by both client and architect for the vision of the project.
